The company, which is one of the largest producers of electric vehicles in the United States, has a $2.5 billion investment in its new facility in Wharton State Forest, where it will build a second power plant that will power its new hybrid vehicles, the Subaru Forestops.
It also will build an automated driving facility in the area that will replace the aging, outdated fleet.
The plant will be a key part of Subaru’s strategy to take its electric vehicle production to new heights, and it’s a move that will likely have the company making a lot of headlines in the coming months.
While the announcement may be news to many, the company says that it is committed to maintaining a low carbon footprint, and the new plant is expected to reduce emissions by more than 90 percent compared to the old plant.
“We’re proud to announce our commitment to a zero-carbon future by building a new power plant at Wharton,” said Subaru’s chief executive officer, Tadashi Iwata.
“Wharton is a prime location for advanced manufacturing and a place we know will continue to play a significant role in the success of our electric vehicle program.”
The new plant will produce more than 300,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year and will provide about 1,300 full-time jobs at its plant, according to the company.
It will also provide a key cog in the company’s effort to reduce its carbon footprint and make its vehicles more energy efficient.
The new facility is located in the town of Wharton, which will be about 90 miles from the U.S. Capitol and the headquarters of the Senate.
The new project will generate more than 8,000 jobs and create more than 1,000 direct and indirect jobs for local residents, according a company press release.
Iwata noted that the new facility will not only help the company reduce its CO2 emissions, but also boost its business.
“Our current facility is in our home state, and that has an impact on our business,” he said.
“It is important to make a positive impact and to ensure we’re providing an environment that supports our businesses and our customers.”
